Tjaarmann — a dictionary-grounded guide to the Wajarri language

Wajarri Language Tutor

About

A free, dictionary-grounded guide to Wajarri — the Aboriginal language of the Murchison region of Western Australia.

Meet Tjaarmann

Tjaarmann is your patient guide to Wajarri. Ask about a word, a greeting, or a whole sentence, and they’ll teach you — warmly, and one step at a time.

Grounded in the dictionary, honest about the rest

Every Wajarri word the tutor gives you is checked against the community Wajarri Dictionary before it answers. It shows where things come from, and — just as importantly — it says so plainly when a word or form isn’t recorded, rather than making one up. It will never invent Wajarri.

How it works, honestly

The whole tutor now runs on our own gear: the part that does the talking is a capable open AI model served from our own hardware, and the Wajarri itself is ours — the dictionary and the word-by-word grounding live right beside it. Nothing you type leaves our server to a third-party AI provider.

Why it exists

This is a language-preservation project. The goal isn’t a phrasebook to look words up in — it’s a tutor that helps you actually speak Wajarri, and keeps the language living and used. Wajarri belongs to the Wajarri community; this tool is here to support learning it, with respect for Elders, Country, and cultural protocol.
